Performance enhancing drugs in Professional Sports is a controversial topic much like talking about politics at family functions, you just don't do it or talk about it. With recent events with professional athletes admitting PED or performance enhancing drug use it has become evident that these "drugs" are rampant in sports. There is a reason that these athletes use these "drugs" or supplements and that’s because in some cases they actually work or have an effect on performance. With one of the largest events in the world drawing millions of viewers the Super Bowl has an additional topic to contend with, PEDs. One of football's beloved heroes is now in the spotlight for illegal use of a performance enhancing drugs and with this controversy we are questioning if this drug could actually aid in a performance boost. We will not address the speculation of if this supplement was actually taking rather we will discuss if this performance enhancing supplement is just that, "performance enhancing". The true spotlight in this article will not be on the football player but the infamous Deer Antler Velvet or Deer Antler Spray.

What is Deer Antler Velvet or Deer Antler Spray?

The supplement in question, is an extract from the actual antlers of deer and have been known to contain small amounts of deer IGF-1 Insulin-like Growth Factor-1. It is thought that supplementing with IGF-1 specifically from this source will increase the growth hormone in the human body resulting in an increase in aerobic performance and the train-ability of muscular strength and endurance.

Why Deer Antlers?

In the wild, Deer regenerates their horns significantly fast due to the abundance of the growth factor IGF-1 found in them. Due to the rate at which the deer regenerate their antlers it can be easily harvested. The rate of growth of the antlers is what is drawing the attention of both the scientific community as well as the sports supplement industry and whether or not it can be used to boost performance in humans.

Does Deer Antler Velvet or Spray Actually Work?

With all supplements and PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) there is always going to be two sides of that proverbial fence. Does it work or doesn't? In this case the evidence would indicate that IGF-1 actually stimulates the body to build more muscle but only if that source is bio available in the body. IGF-1 from Deer Antler may not stimulate that growth response due to the body not containing that specific form. A study done by University of New Brunswick indicated that "although they did not see a direct performance increase due to the supplementation of the deer antler spray further work is required to test the robustness of the observation that this supplement enhances the strength training response and to ensure this observation is not a type I error". With that being said another case study found that deer antler velvet might have a positive impact on individuals with osteoarthritis. With this supplement being so cheap it would be easy to pick it up and try it for yourself but right now there is not enough evidence to show whether or not it actually aids in enhancing performance.
