There are unfortunately a ton of misleading articles and self-proclaimed experts that would love to fill your head with fears and false claims that whey protein is damaging to your kidneys. However they simply do not have the literature to back up these claims. Whey protein is simply that a protein our bodies know exactly what to do with protein; it breaks them down in to individual amino acids and utilizes them throughout the body. Whether the protein is from whey, meat, fish or plants it all comes to the same fate and is broken down quite easily and assimilated by our bodies. So why then would one protein simply not be able to be broken down and cause damage to the kidneys, surely then milk and cheese would also cause these problems.
Again there is simply no literature backing this claim. Why is it that milk and cheese market the fact that their products are good sources of calcium!? But then Whey Protein which is utilized in the same process all of the sudden dangerous. Additionally, the calcium in Whey and most dairy foods for that matter binds with oxylate-containing foods and then is excreted through the GI tract; not the urinary tract system.
In short; Whey Protein is a dairy derived food just like Milk, Cheese, and Yogurt. Our bodies know exactly what to do with the calcium and amino acids in it and diets high in protein were show to actually have a beneficial effect on kidney function. As always before basing your decision on one article or what someone said do a little research into the credibility of the claims and then make an informed choice based on all available facts.
