ZHOU Spirulina Longevity Super Food Review & Taste Test

Video Transcription

Carley:
Hey guys, Carly and John here with BestPriceNutrition YouTube channel. Today, we got in a product I'm super excited about. I've been trying to get it in for a really long time, and we thought it was blue spirulina because as you can see the packaging here, Zhou spirulina. It's very blue, very vibrant, but then when you open it, it appears to just be regular green spirulina. You probably can't tell, but either way, we're going to try it out today. Spirulina is a super food and it is supposed to be good for inflammation.

John:
Yeah. So you actually started the spirulina kick.

Carley:
I did.

John:
I know it's been kind of hot on Instagram. A lot of people mix this into different concoctions of overnight oats or smoothies. A lot of people are doing acai bowls and mixing this in there. And lot of people are doing the blue spirulina, which is very Instagram-y for the visual appeal.

Carley:
It's so cute.

John:
So I know you were pushing to get one of these in, and one of the brands we carry, great brand Zhou, put out a spirulina. I believe they have this in capsules and powder. We got in the capsule form. And like you said, spirulina is a super food.

Carley:
We got in the capsule form?

John:
No, we have it the powder form. They also make it in a capsule form.

Carley:
We could get it in the capsule form.

John:
Yeah we could. If this winds up being a hit, we could bring it in. Spirulina, I think we maybe only have one or two other maybe now food spirulinas, but we really didn't have anything in this category, or very little.

Carley:
No.

John:
Spirulina is packed with nutrients. So we got some B vitamins, some minerals and things like that. Packed with antioxidants. It has anti-inflammatory properties, chlorophyll.

Carley:
Chlorophyll. Lots of chlorophyll.

John:
Good for heart health. And this is actually a micro organism that grows in fresh and salt water. And some people who like to buy supplements and support companies who are sustainable and environmentally conscious, this is sustainably harvested. So that's another selling point, harvested in California. Really cool branding. And I know one of the first things we noticed when we opened it up was how vibrant green this stuff is.

Carley:
And how potent the smell was.

John:
I've heard that tastes a lot better than it smells.

Carley:
Yeah.

John:
And I'm kind of dreading tasting this just because I think this would mix well into a juice or even a morning smoothie. The instructions say nothing about mixing it with water.

Carley:
We're trying it out. Let's see what happens. I'm scared. I brought my reinforcement. Yeah. Chasers.

John:
Carly's a water bottle connoisseur. Why don't you tell them about your new water bottle?

Carley:
Every time I'm on the show, on the YouTube, I have a new water bottle, but I like water bottles.

John:
Let's bring this up here and show.

Carley:
What it looks like?

John:
Yeah.

Carley:
It is so vibrant.

John:
This is the deepest green. I know Jenny mentioned it kind of looks like a pigment of some type.

Carley:
It does.

John:
And I would guess you don't want to get this on your clothes.

Carley:
No.

John:
This stuff really sticks in here. I can smell that already.

Carley:
Oh, I'm scared.

John:
We are going to have green teeth.

Carley:
Yeah. It looks like food dye. Look at that.

John:
This is going to be so bad.

Carley:
You can just tell already?

John:
And I think we should point out, I know you were really excited about this product, and a lot of times the things we sample and try are dented tubs. I actually bought this with my own money this morning. You wrung me up.

Carley:
He did.

John:
So putting our money where our mouths are. And again, this is not how you're supposed to take the supplement, this should probably be mixed in water... Oh my gosh.

Carley:
I think we need more water. It is so dark.

John:
We're going to have to make everybody else in the office try this after this.

Carley:
I hope it makes our teeth green. That would be hilarious.

John:
Oh my gosh.

Carley:
Did you say that G was going to want this? I don't know.

John:
Okay.

Carley:
It's frothy. Why is it frothy John? I can't. No.

John:
You wanted to bring this product in. You wanted to do this video.

Carley:
I don't want to drink it straight with water. Okay.

John:
You ready?

Carley:
Look at all that foam. What is that?

John:
I seriously think I'm going to puke.

Carley:
No, I can't. I can't.

John:
You drink this one. Call Brad in here, make him do a shot with us.

Carley:
Hey Brad. [inaudible 00:05:00] do that into a shot. [inaudible 00:05:09] do you want to take it? Because John said he would throw up. [inaudible 00:05:20] Brad's on the phone. I'll just do it myself.

John:
I'll do it too.

Carley:
No.

John:
I just wanted to force Brad to get in on this too.

Carley:
No, you're going to throw up.

John:
Jenny?

Speaker 3:
Does it smell bad? Does it smell like throw up?

Carley:
No, it just smells like fish.

Speaker 3:
Oh, Brad will do it.

John:
Yeah Brad drinks fish oil.

Carley:
He drinks fish oil.

Speaker 3:
Yeah he drinks fish oil so he should be fine.

Speaker 4:
That's way more than a shot.

Carley:
Don't do it. I feel like you throw off with everything and I can't.

Speaker 3:
No, no.

Carley:
[inaudible 00:05:55] that chaser.

John:
It's not good, but it's not as bad as you think it would be.

Speaker 3:
It smells like when you haven't cleaned the fish tank.

Carley:
Does it taste like that?

Speaker 4:
That's what I thought it smelled like, fish tanks.

John:
There's almost a popcorn flavor to it.

Carley:
Okay.

Speaker 4:
Popcorn?

Carley:
Here. I'll try to do it now.

Speaker 3:
Oh, Carly. I want to see your face expression.

Carley:
Okay. Did you have to plug your nose?

John:
Mm-mm (negative).

Speaker 4:
Just don't think about it. Do it.

Carley:
Oh my gosh.

John:
No, just shoot it down.

Carley:
No. That's disgusting.

Speaker 3:
Your teeth were green for a second.

Carley:
That's so gross.

John:
It's gross but it's not super overpowering. If this were mixed into a smoothie or something, I don't think you'd taste much of it.

Carley:
Popcorn? Where did you get that?

John:
Tastes like a little hint of popcorn afterwards.

Carley:
You should try it.

Speaker 4:
No.

John:
So what do you think?

Carley:
Don't drink it with water. But if you drink it in a smoothie, I think that you'll be good. I don't know. I think it has so many benefits that-

John:
I'm not a huge fan of kale, but I do a kale smoothie every morning and I get a big bag of mixed berries, like blueberries, red berry, raspberries, blackberries from Costco. Berries cover up anything.

Carley:
They do?

John:
Yeah. Make a morning smoothie. Some kale, some berries, a scoop of this and maybe a scoop of some vanilla protein powder, I don't think you'll even taste it.

Carley:
Yeah. Seriously, I just think the benefits of this, again, I wish it was a blue one. I thought it was, but the benefits of spirulina, blue spirulina, whatever type of spirulina are so good that it would definitely be worth... I might just pick up a tub and try it.

John:
I think this is, if not the most, one of the most nutrient dense super foods that you can find.

Carley:
Yeah.

John:
And you can definitely taste all the density of super foods in here.

Carley:
You can see it in the froth, all of that. But yeah. No, I think it's definitely worth trying. Zhou's a good brand.

John:
And obviously this video was more for fun. You're not really supposed to drink it this way. So don't be turned off by our reaction. Mix it in a smoothie, mix it with an orange juice or strong tasting juice. And this stuff is fantastic for you.

Carley:
Yeah.

John:
You got anything else to add?

Carley:
I don't think so. Oh, there's a blog post about it. If you want to learn more specifically about blue spirulina, John wrote a good blog post on BestPriceNutrition.com. So if you want to do a little research before buying this product on what exactly blue spirulina does, or spirulina does, go ahead and check that out.

John:
So yeah, we'll link to the blog post as well as this product down in the description box below. And if you guys have tried spirulina before, or if you even tried the Zhou spirulina, drop a comment, let us know what your reaction was to the taste.

Carley:
