Ghost is a supplement brand who's partnered with tons of our favorite mainstream food brands running the gamut from cookies and bakery items like Chips Ahoy, Nutter Butter and Oreo to candy flavors like Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, and Bubblicious to cereal flavors like Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Trix and others.
So a few months back when Ghost began teasing out an All New YooHoo Ghost RTD Protein Shake, it would be an understatement to say we were excited.
Now I was a little surprised to see YooHoo selected for a flavor collaboration. While personally I'm a HUGE fan of YooHoo, it's one of my favorite drinks, it doesn't necessarily strike me as a popular option among such a youthful brand like Ghost. After all, YooHoo's been around since the 1920's and saw a golden era from the 50's through the 1990's, though it no longer remains the mainstream cultural juggernaut it was some years back. None the less, we were excited to try it.
The Macros of Ghost YooHoo RTD Protein Drink
So the new YooHoo Ghost isn't technically a protein shake, its an ultra filtered skim milk similar to popular drinks like Nurri. Each can features a moderate 120 calories, 3 grams of total carbs, 25 grams of protein and just 2 grams of sugar.
No a little personal aside, YooHoo used to be something I'd use to satisfy my sweet tooth at night. If I was craving ice cream or a cookie I'd instead walk to the corner store to get a YooHoo. Eventually one day I looked at the the macros and realized a YooHoo has 230 calories and 45 grams of sugar and I may as well just eat whatever sweet I had been wanting. That put a damper on my YooHoo habit, though I still to this day enjoy the drink. So I was particularly excited when I saw Ghost rolling out a YooHoo with just 2 grams of sugar.
So How Does Ghost YooHoo Taste?
YooHoo is a tough drink to describe to someone who hasn't tried it. It doesn't taste like chocolate milk because its water based rather than milk based so the taste and texture is much different. YooHoo has a thinner mouth feel followed by a light cocoa note with a cleaner finish without the heavy dairy coating. Some compare it to a combination of a Tootsie Roll, Hershey's Chocolate Syrup and Cocoa Puffs.
So did Ghost nail that YooHoo flavor and classic YooHoo experience?
The Ghost YooHoo is pretty good. In terms of mouth feel, again YooHoo is water based and Ghost YooHoo is milk so it was a bit thicker and heavier, but its an ultra filtered skim milk so it did a pretty good job at mimicking the YooHoo consistency.
As far as the flavor goes it starts strong with that unique chocolate taste of YooHoo, but finished tasting a bit more like a Nurri Chocolate Milkshake. My first time trying the drink I tried it on camera as part of our Youtube Video Review, however I enjoyed another can this morning and this time around I did feel that unique YooHoo flavor was consistent all the way through the can.
How close did Ghost come to replicating an actual YooHoo, I'd give them a 7.5 out of 10.
