Can You Overdose on Collagen?

Can You Overdose on Collagen?

Collagen is one of the primary proteins in the body and is an important part of structural components and connective tissues in the body like skin, tendons, muscles, ligaments, and blood vessels, as well as the eyes and teeth. Collagen supplements have quickly gained popularity in recent years with many celebrities and social media influencers being advocates for collagen supplementation and in some cases even representing collagen brands; such as Jennifer Anniston as well as some of the Kardashians.

Can You Take Too Much Collagen?

In today's post we wanted to address the question of whether you can take too much collagen or if it's possible to overdose on collagen which are common questions we get from our customers as well as questions that are trending on the internet currently.

Collagen is considered to be a safe and non-toxic supplement and most people don't experience any negative side effects from consuming collagen. While collagen is a safe supplement to take with few side effects some users have reported minor side effects when taking large amounts of collagen, and in rare instances sometimes the first few times they take collagen. These side effects include things like an unpleasant taste, feeling bloated or overly full, or other stomach complaints and minor nausea.

To avoid any side effects those taking collagen for the first time should try to take it with some food, or to begin with a lower dose to assess tolerance. Those who are used to taking collagen, but up their dosage or up the frequency in which they take collagen should cut back on the dosage and/or frequency at which they take collagen and the side effects should subside.
